I'm updating from a client so I have no idea how many of you are still "reading" this never-updated journal of d00m. At any rate, I am not dead. I am taking time off from grad school however. I'm not all that sure anymore that I want to keep up with Anthro...what the devil am I going to do with my M.A.? Go for my doctorate? And then what?
So, I'll be working for awhile. Hurrah, hurrah. I'm not terribly excited about it, but I can't keep paying for a degree I'm not sure I want.
On a slightly HP note...I am a huge Snape apologist, but this bit of Machiavelli's The Prince, which I stumbled across doing fic research, makes me think twice. Knowing JKR and her tendacy to pillage from the classical world, I would not be terribly surprised if Snape had no loyalties. That's sort of how I like to write my Slytherins anyway, but regardless...
"And because his actions, for one who was a new Prince, were thus remarkable, I will point out shortly how well he understood to play the part both of the lion and of the fox, each of which natures, as I have observed before, a Prince should know how to assume...And as Severus judged it dangerous to declare open war against both, he resolved to proceed against Niger by arms, and against Albinus by artifice."
Iiiiinteresting.

I know I can't be the only Snape fan who watched Lost tonight and thought ( SPOILER! ) It gave me plot bunnies, which, as can be seen from the sheer amount of fic on this journal, means a whole lot of nothing.
Something I've been sort of meaning to post about: the fic "Invocare" by jordangrant. It has been raved about all over the place and...I hate it. I don't hate it because its poorly written or anything; I actually think it is a fantastic and well-done story, I just hate reading it so so much. It hurts and I'm sure it's supposed to hurt, but gah! I don't like this Snape (I never liked Snape before HBP...an odd arch for a fan to take, but there you have it.) and I'm sorry, but I just can't find the unequal power dynamic of slavery to be "hot" or "sexy". I'm halfway through it though, simply because I can't stop reading until it gets better somehow.
Interestingly enough, the only other fic that ever ripped me apart this much was another Snarry.
Oh, there's also my staunch belief that Snape is straight straight straight. Not that this has stopped me from reading Snape slash in the past. In fact recently I have been thinking of pairing him with Regulus in a fic of my own. Which, as can be seen from the sheer amount of fic on this journal, means a whole lot of nothing.
PS- That gift bag from the GoF premiere came through! It wasn't all that exciting, but nonetheless...

Ginny Weasley... only she's got green eyes. But she's all freckled, so she can't be Lily either. Oops?
This thing is fun and addictive.
And I still have no Black fic. Oops again?

I haven't really spent a lot of time on my Black family fic at all, but I have spent a lot of time thinking about the Blacks. I've never been much into anything Maurauders era before (I ostensibly like Remus/Sirius but I don't actually read it often. What I've read I like, but I never seek it.) but I could see myself getting very into the Blacks. There are many ways they can be read and they're just all so fucked up that it could be fascinating. They're like the Bluths without the funny! (Sorry, I am developing an Arrested Development addiction.)
So, very tiny f-list, I am asking you for Black family recs. They can be gen, they can be shippy, and they can center around any member of the Black clan so long as they deal with familial relationships. (That means I'd rather not read a Maurauder fic where Sirius's hatred of his family is sort of mentioned in passing but isn't really the focus of the story.) I really don't care what they're about, but I'm just interested in seeing well-rendered portrayals of what is sure to be a lovely tangled web of loyalties and deceit. Delightful!

I'm about to tackle a shortish piece about the Black sisters... I've never really read any fic about them, though I've read fics where bits of backstory for them were mentioned and I know of some pretty awful cliches regarding said backstory. If you are familiar with any fics about them, what are some cliches I should avoid like the plague? (Aside from "poor little abused Andromeda." That one is already on the list.)

An old (old old old) friend of mine is an event planner and apparently worked on the NYC premier of GoF. She contacted me yesterday to see if I wanted a gift bag since she remembered I liked Harry Potter. It would be very, very exciting if I can get a gift bag! (May or may not, but I figured this was appropriate news for sharing on this journal.)

I had this dream that this was going to be a fic journal, but unfortunately grad school is EATING MY LIFE and I haven't had any time for that. Lucky for me I also didn't have anyone reading this journal, so it wasn't really an issue. Silly me did friending meme (*waves to new LJ friends*) and now I feel like I must be entertaining. I could talk about my research? (Which is actually fairly interesting, since it is about Disney World and the way people interact with it and each other vis a vis the parks. This is a prime example of why I will be living in a cardboard box once I get my degree.) I could talk about my RL in a vague and unrevealing way? I could get a dictionary and learn to spell? So many fascinating options. Notice how "Writing Your Own HP Meta" was not one of them.
That said, I have joined 20_claims so I will post fic between now and February. Twenty of them, to be precise.

Title: We Are Supermen Summary: We’re all so invincible until the end. Snape has betrayed every loyalty he’s ever held. Draco has no loyalties. Implied, one-sided Snape/Narcissa and slight Harry/Draco. Rating: PG? For lots of vain sacrifice? Disclaimer: Not my characters. Not even my preferred characterizations for the characters featured herein. Nietzsche owns the quotes and, in a way, the title. Keep on keeping on (with being insane) Nietzsche… A/N: Written in about an hour on a whim while away from the internet for an entire 4 days. Not beta’ed, not Britpicked. Short. Feedback appreciated since I write fic only about once every never.

So what does one do with a blog? I confess that I don't really know. It isn't that I've never had one before... I've got abandoned GJs and blogspots all over town. The difference was that they were places where I posted about my actual life; the people I know, my jobs, homes, loves, schooling, likes, and dislikes. That isn't what I want this to be. Originally I wanted this to be a place where I can follow what is happening in the Harry Potter fandom from one convenient spot. I've lurked here for ages, I thought maybe I'd participate a bit. I've got nothing much to contribute though, so there's that.
Still, I've friended some news communities and if I find myself commenting to people regularly (unlikely, I'm a lurking slacker!) then maybe I'll friend people. But what will I post here besides mindless squee? I'd sort of like to keep the RL out of it, you know? I guess I should look into what other people do here, since I'm sure LJ isn't some giant telephone directory of fandom. Unless there are really people walking around named "Azura H. Willowdragon", in which case my heart cries for them.
A bit about me: - I'm female, 23 years old, and my name is Samantha. My friends call me Sammy. - I am going for my M.A. in Anthropology. Yay poverty. - I live in Massachusetts. - I have been lurking in various parts of the fandom for a little over a year and a half. - I ship Harry/Draco, Harry/Draco/Snape, Ron/Hermione, Remus/Sirius, and a bunch of other things. - I fall firmly on the side of "Snape is Dumbledore's man" and "Draco is a snivelling little shit, but not evil". - I love Indian food. - I'm a decent Italian cook, but only when I have good ingredients. - I love travel. Hello, anthro student! ;-) - Most of my favorite movies are obscure, black and white, and have subtitles either because they are foreign or very very old. OK, maybe not "most", but "many". - I fail at keeping this totally free of RL! - I chose this LJ name because I'm a fan of jazz music, and "Grandpa's Spells" is a favorite song of mine. Plus, it seemed appropriate for a vaguely Harry Potter themed journal.
